Hoje é o dia de retratação de todos os grandes sites de tecnologia sobre uma informação que circulou a Internet nas últimas semanas: a pré-venda de 1,5 milhão de smartphones G1 pela T-Mobile.

A Information Week foi atrás de Anders Bylund,o autor do artigo original presente no site Motley Fool, que disse ter citado um outro artigo do site Cens.com:

I contacted Anders Bylund, the author of the original Motley Fool article that hundreds of stories are citing. I was curious as to how he got these figures and he gave me his rationale.

He cited a Cens.com article that said, “according to industry insiders, T-Mobile is planning to order a total of between 1.5 million and 2 million units of G1 with HTC in the near future, including 400,000 to 500,000 to be sold in the fourth quarter of this year.”

Then, Bylund cited T-Mobile selling out of pre-order units, and tripling the number of phones initially available. He then tripled the 500,000 number to get 1.5 million.

Ou seja: a T-Mobile planejava a ordem de um total entre 1,5 e 2 milhões de smartphones G1 junto à HTC em um futuro próximo, incluindo 400.000 a 500.000 para serem vendidos no último trimestre de 2008. Anders Bylund transcreveu a citação para seu artigo de maneira errada, alegando que não havia mais disponibilidade de smartphones G1 e triplicou os 500.000 para chegar aos 1,5 milhão (???).

As atuais vendas estimadas do G1 estão entre 200.000 a 300.000 unidades.
